Standardville
The school house.
Old bath house for the miners.
Standardville is one of many ghost towns up Spring Canyon. Ruins and structures litter the hillsides. Spring Canyon is a very pretty drive and I highly recommend it.
This town has a history of striking miners. Several labor incidents flared up in the district. In 1922 a deputy sheriff was killed by strikers who were attempting to stop a train. Newspapers wrote from an anti-union point and one striker was even sentenced to life imprisonment just for going on strike.
The mines near Standardville began to do extremely well in the 1940's. Expenses then began to increase and new safety laws made it difficult to fulfill their quotas. The mines closed in 1950 followed by the stores, school, and hospital.
To find Standardville, head west from Helper up Spring Canyon. Stop and ask the residents or store attendants where the Canyon Street is and follow that west up the mountain about 4.5 miles.
