Georgetown

Only a couple of structures still stand at Georgetown.  As you travel west on the dirt road heading towards the site, you'll first come upon a cemetery.  Set upon the base of the mountain, the cemetery is a pretty site.  Further up the road lies the ghost of Georgetown.

While my wife and I walked the area, she found a very old empty bottle.  It was a one gallon wine bottle that had 'Ernest and Julio Gallo' written on it.

Georgetown was established in 1874 by farmers.  At the turn of the century, most left the farming community because of extreme draught conditions.  By 1940, the town was completely deserted.

To find Georgetown, go 2 miles south from what is now Cannonville. Take a hard right on a dirt road and head west for 1 mile.  You will come upon the cemetery first and about another 1/2 mile is the town.

2 1/2 stars.
