Coal City
Fallen Log Cabins dot the area.
The old school house.
Coal City is a small ghost town nestled up on a small bench about a half mile off the main road that leads up Consumer's Wash Canyon. There is definitely a ghostly feeling as you enter the town. Most the buildings have fallen and mainly foundations remain.
The idea of starting Coal City was to provide a community located a couple of miles away from the mines. The town site was laid out in 1921 and began to disintegrate in 1935. An old school/church house still stands without its roof. It is well worth the drive if you plan to visit the ghost towns up the road closer to the mine - National, Consumers, and Sweet.
To find Coal City, take the Consumer's Wash road that heads West from U.S. Highway 6-50 between Price and Helper. After 3.1 miles, you will cross a railroad. Keep going about another 5.1 miles and a road turns off to the right which turns around a small hill. The area may be gated off to vehicles. However, you can easily walk in about a half-mile to see the town. Don't worry - the area is not fenced off to keep people out, just to keep vehicles out.
