Black Rock

In 1876 a ranch was established which operated for many years under several ownerships. A couple other ranches were developed in the area up until the turn of the century. Gradually, the area grew and a couple of stores were built. The Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad was built through the town and ranches in the area began to ship out large amounts of wool.

The town site obtained its name from the black lava outcropping nearby. During the late 1930's railroad operations were consolidated in large division points such as Milford. Grazing lands also became poor and people gradually left.

Black Rock is worth a visit if you're on your way to Delta or Milford. It's right off the freeway. There are only a couple of structures and a few foundations left. You have to push your way through the dry bush to get to any of the buildings. The area is dry and desolate, but very pretty.

Black Rock is 48 miles south of Delta on the 257 Interstate or 23 miles North of Milford.  Antelope Springs is located a few miles east from Black Rock.  I have never personally been at the springs,  so if you make it, let me know what is there and if it is worth the voyage.  There used to be a hotel and a couple saloons next to the springs.

2 1/2 stars.
